Facebook Is Fertile Ground

Facebook has become the whipping boy of privacy wonks and business analysts. For the rest of us, it has become the dominant place to keep in touch with friends. But it also offers a valuable opportunity for businesses -- once businesses recognize this opportunity and act on it. Years ago, email changed the way consumers and businesses communicate. Today, Facebook has provided us with a social network that trumps the communication potential of email. The power of this social network has significant marketing potential.

Businesses often don't recognize or perhaps just forget how powerful Facebook can be as a communication platform. It might be that they are so trained to run display advertising that even when they hear about ads performing poorly on social networks, they're unable to identify the new opportunity. This opportunity, however, is NOT advertising -- It is a chance for enhanced communication, which leads to better relationships and improved services. That's what people want.

Facebook is especially attractive to marketers who are trying to connect with moms because moms' limited time and fragmented attention (they're busy!) make it crucial to market to them using methods that fit into their lifestyles and that adapt to their habits. Lisa Finn and I recently completed a study and report on marketing to moms on Facebook. Moms on Facebook are especially appealing to marketers because of the way that moms use this social network -- to interact and share experiences with other moms as well as to talk about the products and services that play important roles in their lives.

Here are a few interesting nuggets from our study that will help you connect with moms on Facebook:

-They log on frequently. More than eight in 10 moms log on daily, and three in 10 log on five or more times a day.

-hey use the site primarily to interact with others in their social networks - which translates into a lot of potential referrals.

-They are receptive to marketing on the site, as long as it follows their rules. Sixty-four percent said they either like ads on Facebook or feel neutral about them.

-Moms are wary of offers that sound too good to be true and want marketers to respect their boundaries by not overloading them with updates. They welcome coupons and other ways to save money, and they are open to sharing their opinions and ideas with the companies they like.

-Three-quarters of moms are fans of at least one company on Facebook, and parenting-specific sites are moms' top picks.

-There are businesses taking advantage of the marketing and communication opportunities on Facebook. Businesses that moms in our research called out include Cool Mom Picks, 24/7 Moms, Janie and Jack, Sesame Place, Crayola, Starbucks, Kodak, Whole Foods and Trader Joes. There can be so many more.

Facebook is fertile ground for marketers to engage mothers and drive sales, but communication must be on moms' terms. While they don't have time for brands that don't get it, they embrace the brands that play by their rules. So seize this opportunity to use Facebook to connect with moms, a market segment that can add tremendous value to a customer base.

Can't anyone in the mobile industry count?

The frustration over getting reliable metrics from mobile media continues, although digital veterans shouldn't be surprised. We are a decade and a half into the life of the "most accountable medium," the Web, and just this week we see some of the major online measurement firms still tweaking their models and arguing over methodology. I have major media companies reporting their monthly numbers to me, and I see staggering differences between the stats they claim from their internal logs via Google Analytics or Omniture and the third-party numbers. It's not just mobile, either. It's still a mess all over.

Years ago, I recall an early Mobile Marketing Association event where Jim Ryan, then head of consumer data products at Cingular, tried to debunk the myth of the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-measuring network operators. I paraphrase from distant memory, of course, but Jim made light of marketers' presumption that the carriers were sitting on all of this plum usage and behavioral data that would unlock tremendous mobile targeting. Sure, we carriers have terabytes of logs and user-level data, he said, but it is not in any form that marketers or even we could use in the way marketers envision.

I have no idea whether the carriers are any closer today to having their data in actionable form. As a critic covering this world, it's still tough for me to get even basic numbers on where online traffic is going, from where and how much of it there is. This week Ground Truth unveiled its new "census-based" approach, which leverages the actual data and logs from select carriers. Our own Laurie Sullivan covered the details of the offering today, so I won't rehash the details.

Basically, Ground Truth is trying to counter the current approaches involving extrapolated panels of metered usage and self-reporting surveys with a large 2.5 million-person sample of actual traffic. The company will offer weekly reports rather than monthly. It's promising valuable page view, ad network, and clickstream data.

When I spoke to founder and CTO Mike "Luni" Libes and CEO Sterling Wilson last week, they said that the reports would aggregate the many domains under single content brands to about 1,200 in their report, which they say covers 97% of mobile page views. "For each Web site we will report hits, page views, unique users, session time, total bytes," says Libes. The click stream data will reveal previously visited sites and where a user headed afterwards. They also says their metrics will be able to give a truer picture of which ad networks are in fact serving the most inventory and getting the most clicks. "We can confirm Google made the right choice," Libes said, referring to the search engine's acquisition of AdMob.

At least one of the striking things about Ground Truth's data is how it belies the notion that major Web and offline media are strolling in to own the mobile platform. In fact, among the top ten sites ranked by page views, mobile-centric brands like MocoSpace and Cellufun are ever-present.

For the week of Jan. 4-10, Ground Truth reports these as the top ten page view grabbers. These numbers exclude pages served on operator portals. Ground Truth is not able to measure deck activity. No doubt a rank of unique users would look different. Notable absentees from this cut are ESPN and Weather.com, for instance.

They tell me that in most cuts of the data, whether it is top 20 or 50, about half of the top mobile sites are mobile-centric brands. "I was expecting more like 20%," says Libes. "On a page view basis, Facebook and Mocospace often swap" the leadership position on any given day, he says. The amount of activity on social media, especially in page views, is not too surprising. Social nets like MocoSpace have told me in the past that they have seen average sessions of 100 page views as users rifle through member profiles. The same phenomenon occurs on the dating sites. One executive at Match.com told me that the company sees more per-session page view activity on their mobile app than they see on the Web site. In some ways, this is dubious for the content providers. That is an awful lot of raw inventory to fill.

Also revealing is the shallowness of Google's position in Ground Truth charts. While it is among the top page generators, with the most subscribers on mobile, "they don't have a lot of anything else," Libes tells me. Google is not nearly as strong on metrics like session time or bytes served.

Social media is the killer app when it comes to sheer tonnage on mobile. 62.5% of all mobile page views Ground Truth is measuring are going to social sites. Also surprising is the relative position of news reading, which Libes tells me has a fraction of the audience of social media. And the old myth that adult content drives interest in a new medium gets debunked by Ground Truth's metrics. On a page view basis, adult sites attract only 1% of mobile activity, although they do produce more bytes per page than other categories.

Let the usual pissing match over methods begin. I am sure we will hear both comScore and Nielsen weigh in shortly on the superiority of their respective metrics. At this stage I can't make much of a judgment. But it is good to have a different sort of measuring stick here that gets us to ask more questions about how users really access mobile content -- and where marketers should be placing their bets.

I've blogged about this Cardinal phone calling card before, but I wanted to do so again because so few people are taking advantage of this offer that gives you a free 800-number and very cheap rates. With this deal any person that needs a long distance service can have one for very little money. It's a great deal even if you don't want or need a toll-free number to give to customers. But if you do get one you may decide to set up the 800-number and give it to family and friends. The reason is that you will see how really cheap it is and you may want to talk to your friends or family more often than you do now. By giving them the 800 number you pay the same lows rates, but they can call you when they need to talk to you.

This is PERFECT if you have kids that are away at school. With an 800 number they can call you anytime from anywhere, and if they have to use a pay phone there is an extra charge, but with this card it's only $0.99 so it's not too bad.

If you are in business I don't have to tell you what an 800 number means for increasing sales and customer service satisfaction. Yes, and it also makes your company look bigger than it did before. If you look at any business contacts and some have an 800 number and some don't, which one are you going to think is more professional and more importantly, more successful to be able to afford to offer this? If you call the phone company, YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO PAY A LOT MORE to get 800 service. Not only to get the number, but also for the calls you get because the rates are not going to be this low. Less than 2 cents a minute. Talk for a half an hour for 60 cents...!

The site where I got this card had over 20 different ones to choose from. Some phone cards are less expensive rates, but they charge a weekly maintenance fee. If you do a high volume of calling you may want to select one of these other cards. And not all cards work in all countries, so if you are located outside the US, you'll want to check which cards have the best rate for where you live and call. There is a simple rate-finder tool on the site home page. They even offer AT&T phone cards if you are not sure about some of these card names that you have not hear of before, but the rates are really, really high, so that may not be the best option.

Lingo VoIP Free Phone Adapter: $21.95 a month+

Watch out for getting a call from a company called Lingo. They are offering a VOIP phone service that seems very competitive at $21.95 a month, but from my experience they are not to be trusted. The sales guy I talked to was VERY persistent, even though I told him I was not going to stop using my $22 a month wired phone service, and that I was considering the MagicJack that only costs $40 a YEAR. They tell you they don't want to take up your valuable time and send you and email so you can look at the information on their web site. The reason for this is NOT that they are considerate of your time, but that they want to have you use their AFFILIATE link in their email. Then if you become a customer, they get a nice commission. That commission is why they have to charge as much as they do and all the extra fees.

What I found out in letting him try to overcome my objections is that while he at first said there is no long term contracts, they do have an item listed under "Additional Charges" where if you cancel after 30 days before the end of two years, you have to pay them an extra $100. Hey Lingo, here's an idea for you: Why don't YOU pay ME $100 if I drop your service before the end of two years. That might provide incentive for you to make sure I don't WANT to leave, rather than my not leaving because I have to pay YOU...!!!

Ok, I pay about $22 a month. I do some long distance calling and have a nice phone card with pretty low rates. Only 2.5 cents per minute.The Continental Phone Card that I use also has a free 800 number that comes with my account. I don't make many calls, so I pay $20 every 2-3 months. LINGO talks about free long distance, but well take a look at this:

It may be great service and a good company, but I would be nuts to change. The bottom line is if you get any pushy sales person calling you, get it all in writing first and make sure you understand all the details first.

So why don't I get a cell phone or VOIP phone? Because my wired phone is cheap and it still works even when the power and/or my Internet goes out. What I really want is an Asterisk server so I can have a real home office PBX. Then I would try hooking one or more MagicJacks into that for a super-cheap multi-line SOHO phone system. Maybe someday...

Network teams in place to support customer communications

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.-- August 30, 2008 --Alltel Wireless, with America's largest network behind it, is continuing to provide digital service to customers across the Gulf Coast as Hurricane Gustav approaches the area. The company has network crews in place throughout the region ready to provide reliable network coverage when the hurricane makes landfall. The crews are prepared to respond to any weather-related emergencies that might threaten communications services in coastal states.

"Alltel takes very seriously our responsibility to ensure our customers stay connected to friends and family during Hurricane Gustav," said Chris Smith, executive vice president of network services for Alltel. "Alltel has made significant investments in its wireless network to improve coverage and reliability, and we have once again taken all the necessary steps to prepare for Gustav."

Earlier today, the company began closing retail stores in south Louisiana to support evacuation efforts. The following closings were announced through Monday:

    * 1043 West Tunnel Blvd. in Houma, La.; 1818 Manhattan Blvd. in Harvey, La.; 2701 N. Causeway Blvd. in Metairie, La.; 1000 W. Esplanade St. in Kenner, La.; 9424A Three Rivers Road in Gulfport, Miss.; 808 Highway 190, Suite B in Covington, La.; and 1302 Corporate Square in Slidell, La.

Alltel will continue to monitor the storm through its command center operations so that it can respond quickly and effectively with manpower, generators and equipment to keep customers in communication with friends and family once Gustav makes landfall.

Alltel also works to help customers in hard-hit areas. All other retail stores will remain open as long as possible. Stores that are closed will reopen as soon as conditions permit to allow customers access to phone chargers and batteries. Alltel opens mobile retail stores in particularly hard-hit areas.

Network preparations to this point:

    * Secured agreements with vendors to provide fuel to keep trucks and generators running.
    * Placed generators on standby in hurricane-prone areas, and tested on-site backup generators for readiness in case of a power outage.
    * Prepared to provide lodging, RVs, food and water for technicians working in storm-hit areas.

Customers can prepare for Gustav by:

    * Verifying that wireless phones are working properly.
    * Programming wireless phones with emergency contact numbers.
    * Making sure wireless phone batteries remain fully charged.
    * Keeping additional charged batteries on hand along with car chargers. Phones, batteries and chargers should be kept in dry, easily accessible areas.

In addition, once Gustav makes landfall, customers should consider:

    * Using Text Messaging instead of trying to place a call.
    * Limiting non-emergency calls, whenever possible.
    * Waiting 10-15 seconds before dialing again if a call fails to go through.
    * Using their camera phones to record damage for insurance purposes.

Online Resources Available to Help Customers Prepare for Purchase

Variety of Attractive Plans Combine Voice and Unlimited Data

Dallas, Texas, July 11, 2008 - AT&T begins selling iPhone 3G today in its retail stores at 8 a.m. local time across the United States, along with a variety of attractive monthly plans that combine voice and unlimited data use. iPhone 3G uses the nation's fastest 3G wireless network, which reaches 300 major metropolitan areas.

Pricing and Eligibility
AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) has announced that AT&T is making it easy for customers to prepare for their iPhone 3G purchase by posting "Get iReady" tips and frequently asked questions at www.att.com/iphone. The site also includes a link for customers to check their upgrade eligibility and other wireless account information.

iPhone 3G phones will be available for $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB model. These prices require two-year contracts and are available to the following customers:

    * iPhone customers who purchased before July 11*
    * Customers activating a new line with AT&T
    * Current AT&T customers who are eligible, at the time of purchase, for an upgrade discount

Current customers who are not eligible for an upgrade discount can purchase iPhone 3G for $399 for the 8GB model or $499 for the 16GB model. Both options require a new two-year service agreement. Current customers may also choose to wait until they become eligible for an upgrade discount. Eligibility is generally determined by amount of time remaining on a current contract and payment history.

Current AT&T customers who are upgrading to iPhone 3G will pay an $18 upgrade fee and new AT&T customers will pay the standard $36 activation fee.

Open Source Telephony - Is it Disruptive or an Evolution?

LONDON-- July 01, 2008 --Open source telephony is gradually gaining traction in Europe due its cost advantages over proprietary IP PBX and call centre products. Frost & Sullivan's analysis shows that the cost of an open source telephony 'line' can be up to 40 per cent less than an averagely priced IP PBX/Communication Manager. Total cost of ownership (TCO) comparison indicates a similar picture, with the cost benefits far greater in a call centre environment and in settings where the proportion of 'professional services fee' is higher.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.enterprise.frost.com), European Open Source Telephony Market, finds that the market shipped more than 74,000 lines in 2007 and estimates this to reach 1.95 million in 2013.

Frost & Sullivan studied a number of 500+ extension deployments in the open source telephony markets. Some of them included complex integration, while others were across numerous sites distributed across continents. These deployments are testimony of the capabilities of the technology and the expertise of the people supporting it.

"Our research finds that many of the open source telephony vendors have been enjoying a very high growth rate," notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Dorota Oviedo. "Several notable open source telephony vendors are investing in the European market and 2008 will be dominated by channel activities, especially channel recruitment and training. Established participants will be investing to expand their footprint mainly through distribution."

Nevertheless, mindshare and user acceptance of open source telephony is relatively low at present. Open source telephony vendors face a huge challenge in competing against participants that use proprietary technologies. These vendors benefit from their well-established (legacy) market position, brand image, strong distribution network and strong relationship with the customer base.

"The biggest challenge that the open source market has been facing and gradually overcoming is the issue of negative market perceptions," says Oviedo. "Open source projects are relatively young and thus, struggle with market concerns and perceptions of lack of support, scalability, functionality or reliability."

Open source telephony vendors should invest in building awareness through site visits, publishing success stories, and so on. Research suggests that once prospects overcome the initial reluctance and run a test system, success rate for open source telephony deployment is relatively high.
