Long distance calling in telecommunications often refers to those telephone calls that are made outside a certain physical area, and are usually characterized by the inclusion of an area code outside of a local phone call area. Non-VIOP long-distance calls usually have steep long-distance charges and fees which will vary between phone companies and are the subject of much price competition. And international phone calls are any phone calls that are made between different countries, and usually carry even higher charges. These long distance phone calls are charged to the person that is calling unless those called accept a collect call. Phone cards can greatly reduce the cost of making phone calls to other countries and even within the same country.
